The Crookston Pirates boys basketball team earned a hard-fought 82-70 victory over the Roseau Rams on Thursday, Feb. 19 at the Crookston High School Gymnasium. A dominant second-half performance proved to be the difference maker, as the Pirates scored 50 points after halftime to secure the win on their home court.
 
Leading the way for Crookston was senior Reggie Winjum. The University of Minnesota Crookston commit had an impressive game for the Pirates, notching 28 points while also contributing five rebounds and three assists.
 
Eighth grader Beau Smith added 15 points in the winning effort and made his presence felt defensively with three rebounds and a steal. 
Freshman center Nolan Johnson recorded 14 points and had seven rebounds. The Pirates also received key contributions from seniors Carter Fee and Nolan Cassavant. Fee chipped in with 13 points and secured four rebounds, while Cassavant led the team with nine rebounds and added seven points.

For the Rams, Jordan Borowicz carried the offensive load with a strong effort, scoring 36 of Roseau’s 70 points. Aiden Evitts recorded 16 points in the loss. Noah Broten and D’mari Huston-Ware contributed 9 and 3 points respectively. Tyler Marvin-Nichols, Landon Baumgartner, and Isaac Detwiler scored 2 points each.

With the win, Crookston improves to 5-17 on the season, while Roseau falls to 6-18. Both teams will look to build momentum in the coming weeks as they prepare for the Minnesota High School Section Playoffs.

Pirates drop road game at Warroad
The Crookston Pirates dropped a 74-60 road decision to Section 8AA rival Warroad Tuesday night at Warroad High School.
Warroad’s Doot Boucha led all scorers with 30 points. Top scorers for the Pirates were Winjum with 28 points and Johnson with 14.
Crookston was scheduled to wrap up the regular season Friday at home against Section 8A foe Kittson County Central.
Section 8AA playoff seeding and opening round pairings will be announced Saturday.
